2021-2025

The Park Playground

The Park Playground is an entertainment company where people can play free roam VR games in group. At the end of 2021 they approached me with an offer to join as a web and game developer. At that point, I was a reasonably skilled web developer, so I jumped at the opportunity.

Still very much a startup, it was only me and the CTO Gilles Adrien Cenni for the first 2 years. The rest of the (young and energetic) team more than made up for this. It was a demanding job, but I have some of my fondest memories working for the company and met people I now call friends.

Being the only (web) developer in charge of a lot of the companies web architecture put a lot of pressure on me. It also led to me learning a whole lot in a short amount of time. I especially learned a lot about backend development and CI/CD. Over time, the team grew to include two more web developers and Rob Jackson, our project manager and still one of the best colleagues I've ever worked with. Special shout-out to Kilian Melaerts as well for keeping morale high with his (sometimes very) silly jokes during tough sprints!

At the start of 2025, after some restructuring, the company decided to move from a custom-built platform to an off-the-shelf solution. Since this change would gradually make my role redundant, and with many of the original team members having moved on, I chose to help with this transition and then quit myself.

I will forever be grateful to The Park Playground for the opportunities, the experiences, and most of all, the amazing people I met along the way!

2019-2020

Syntra AB: UX Design Course

A good user experience (UX) should be at the the top of the priority list for any piece of software that is intended for (real) users. Having always been interested in this aspect of development, I decided to take an evening course in UX Design at Syntra.

During the course I learned how to research user traits and behaviors to iteratively design experiences that meet the needs of as many users as possible.

2018-2021

Self employed: Multiple clients & projects

At the end of 2018 World of Waw, the company I had been working for, was unfortunately not profitable enough to keep me and my colleague employed. As a result, we were let go. Tim, the CTO, asked I'd be interested in going freelance to continue to maintain and develop World of Waw's projects.

After some consideration I decided to take the leap and founded my own company, Joeri Van den Eynden in September of 2018. Over the next few years, I worked on both existing and new projects together with my former CTO.

Going self-employed taught me a lot. Not just about development, but also about how businesses, quotations, invoices and taxes work. It's been an interesting journey so far.

2015-2018

World of Waw

My first job! 🥳

World of Waw is an app development startup where I began my career as a Unity frontend developer. Under the guidance of senior developer and CTO Tim Stroobandt I was able to apply and quickly grow my programming skills.

During my time here, I gained a much deeper understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP), REST APIs, augmented reality (AR), database management, math and more.

So Tim, if you're reading this, thanks for everything!

2015-2017

Syntra Genk: Analyst Programmer

Since programming intrigued me the most after college, I decided to enroll in the evening course called 'Analyst Programmer' at Syntra Genk. During the course, I learned to create Windows WPF applications and how to manage and communicate with databases using (MS) SQL and C#.

2014-2015

Master Game & Art Design

Game & Art Design is an academic program, which meant that after I earning my bachelor's degree (see below), I was encouraged to continue for an additional year to obtain my master's degree. During this year I chose to specialize in tech related subjects like programming and 3D software.

Because we had more freedom in our creative and technical direction, I had a blast working on almost every project that year. I ultimately graduated with a distinction.

2010-2014

Bachelor Game & Art Design

At the Media Arts & Design Faculty (now re-branded as Luca School of Arts) I earned my college degree in Communication & Multimedia Design: Game & Art Design. During my studies, I developed a wide range of skills, including 2D/3D art design, programming and research.

Skills

Web Development

I began my journey in web development in 2018, and over time have grown into a confident full-stack developer.

I'm well versed in modern frontend frameworks and tools, with a strong foundational grasp of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Since 2020 I've gravitated more toward backend work, and now genuinely prefer it: I have solid experience building HTTP servers, designing REST APIs, and performant SQL databases.

I'm also comfortable working with CI/CD pipelines, although I'd describe myself as competent rather than an expert in that area.

Game & Mixed Reality Development

I started my career in 2015, making game and mixed reality development the very foundation of my professional journey. It was also the focus of my college education. While I'm most experienced with the Unity Engine, I'm always eager to explore and master new tools and platforms.

What I love most about games is that they represent — perhaps more than any other medium — a pure, immersive human experience. Alongside that, I like that the fact that performance and efficiency are not optional extras, but undisputed core goals in game development.

When it comes to game development, I'm (obviously) strongest on the coding front: I have solid competency in vector math, and optimizing real-time performance. In addition, I bring practical experience in 2D/3D art and design tools, which gives me a strong sense of how the visual and the technical work together.

Because my first job was heavily focused on augmented reality (AR), I also have hands-on experience in that space.

Although I haven't worked professionally in this field for a while, I'll always remain interested in it.

Devops

I'm familiar with DevOps, though I wouldn't call myself an expert — my experience has largely grown out of necessity as the lone maintainer of infrastructure. Still, I find it deeply rewarding to automate tasks and improve developers' workflows and productivity.

I use Linux as my daily work environment, so I'm comfortable with shell scripting and system administration fundamentals.

I'm most familiar with AWS when it comes to cloud infrastructure, but I have also worked with GCP and MS Azure.

UX/UI Design

I don't consider myself an artist, but I do have a firm grasp of design fundamentals. My strongest advantage is knowing how design software works, which allows me to clearly communicate my needs — or even collaborate directly with design professionals.

This understanding also enables me to thoughtfully apply these principles to the UX and UI design of the applications I build or contribute to.

Relevant tools

Analytics

In today's data-driven environment, the value of good analytics is clear. While I'm not an analytics specialist, I found it very fulfilling to collaborate closely with analytics experts and deliver precise, well-structured data that empowers them to do their work effectively.

Relevant tools

Pproject Management & Team Work

While project management isn't the role I personally seek, I'm well acquainted with agile development practices and the supporting toolset.

I like working with a good project manager though, as I firmly believe that they can free up the team's mental bandwidth, enabling everyone to work more efficiently and effectively.

Miscellaneous

I'm genuinely curious about almost any form of media, design, or technology. Below is a collection of tools, languages, and frameworks I haven't used in a professional capacity — but am eager to learn and develop further.

These include video & audio production, embedded software, emerging web frameworks, system programming languages, and more.
